Diamondbacks 7, Rockies 2: Matt Davidson hit a three-run homer and Trevor Cahill pitched into the sixth inning as visiting Arizona jumped out early against Colorado.
Martin Prado and Chris Owings each added an RBI double and Tuffy Gosewisch singled in a run for the Diamondbacks, who moved two games above .500 at 78-76. Cahill (8-10) allowed two runs (one earned) and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings to improve to 5-0 in his last eight starts.
Davidson, who smashed the first home run of his career against the Rockies at home last weekend, came up with two runners on in the third and lifted a 2-2 fastball from Collin McHugh (0-3) out to straightaway center to highlight a four-run rally.
McHugh was charged with six runs on 11 hits in five innings as Colorado had a modest two-game winning streak come to an end and dropped back into last place in the National League West.
Prado gave Arizona a quick lead in the first and Gosewisch made it a 2-0 gap in the second before Davidson’s homer and Owings’ double tripled the advantage in the third. The Rockies got one run back on Jordan Pacheco’s sacrifice fly in the fourth and another on Jonathan Herrera’s single in the sixth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Colorado 1B Todd Helton, who is down to three home games left in his career, provided a highlight for the Rockies with a sneaky slide on Pacheco’s sacrifice fly to avoid a tag. … Colorado OF Charlie Blackmon went 3-for-5 and is 17-for-34 in his last seven games. … Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt tacked on an RBI single in the ninth and has 13 RBIs in his last seven contests.
