Kyle Phillips picked a good time for his first major league homer, sending a solo blast out to deep right in the top of the 10th inning to lead the San Diego Padres past the host Atlanta Braves, 3-2, on Monday.

Phillips, a rookie catcher who was called up when Nick Hundley went on the disabled list on May 5, threw out Jordan Schaffer attempting to steal to end the bottom of the ninth and then took a hanging curveball from lefthander George Sherrill (1-1) over the wall in the 10th to snap a 2-2 deadlock.

Chad Qualls (3-2) got credit for the win, and Heath Bell worked the bottom of the 10th for his 13th save.

Ryan Ludwick and Brian McCann traded off RBIs in the first and third, with Ludwick providing the Padres with a pair of one-run leads only to have McCann respond in the bottom of each frame with RBI hits, leaving it knotted at 2-2 after the third.

San Diego starter Aaron Harang and Atlanta starter Tim Hudson matched each other through six innings before leaving it up to two of the best bullpens in the league.
